Melbourne’s booming population is creating an urgent need for new education facilities, with nearly 900 new kindergartens and 60 additional schools required by 2036, according to a recent report from Infrastructure Victoria.
The report highlighted significant demand in Melbourne’s fast-expanding suburbs, particularly in the north, west, and south-east regions. Infrastructure Victoria CEO Jonathan Spear emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, “The time to plan is now. We need to deliver the schools and preschools that families need.”
Families are already feeling the pressure. A Bundoora resident with two children shared her relief after securing preschool placements for both of them despite the competitive enrollment process.
Minister for Children Liza Blandthorn acknowledged the report’s findings, confirming that the government remains committed to building 100 new schools by 2026. However, the report indicates that further expansion will be essential to accommodate future growth.
As Melbourne’s population continues to rise, planning for new kindergartens and schools is critical to ensuring that every child receives the education they deserve.
