Exciting developments are underway in Belmont, with construction set to begin early this year on a new kindergarten adjacent to Oberon Primary School in Dorothy Avenue. Scheduled to open in Term 1 of 2026, this modular kindergarten will offer at least 118 places for three- and four-year-old programs, providing a much-needed boost to local early education options.
The new facility will feature at least two rooms, designed to accommodate the growing demand for kindergarten programs in the area. Modular construction is a key aspect of this project, with sections of the building pre-fabricated off-site in a factory. This method reduces construction time and minimizes disruptions to the surrounding community. Once delivered to the site, builders will assemble the modules, connect utilities, and complete outdoor play areas and landscaping.
Positioning kindergartens close to schools like Oberon Primary offers numerous benefits. It facilitates a seamless transition from kindergarten to primary school and provides convenience for parents and carers managing busy schedules. Geelong MP Christine Couzens highlighted the significance of the project during her visit to Oberon Primary School, announcing that this kindergarten is one of 25 new facilities set to open near government schools in 2026.
These new kindergartens will collectively provide over 3,200 places, addressing the high demand in the Belmont area. The Victorian government’s ongoing investment in early childhood infrastructure has seen the delivery of 60 new or expanded kindergartens since 2019, ensuring that every new government primary school built since 2021 includes an on-site kindergarten.
Minister for Children Lizzie Blandthorn emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, “We’re proud to be funding early childhood infrastructure because we know how important the early years are in setting our kids up for the rest of their lives.”
