Four-Year-Old Kindergarten is becoming Pre-Prep

Exciting changes are coming to Victoria’s early childhood education system! Starting in 2025, Four-Year-Old Kindergarten will transition to Pre-Prep, doubling its weekly learning hours. Here’s what families need to know about this transformation and its long-term benefits.

What Is Pre-Prep?

Pre-Prep is an extended early learning program offering 30 hours of play-based education per week, led by qualified teachers. It supports children’s development by enhancing social, literacy, and numeracy skills through interactive learning.

Why Are Hours Increasing?

Research shows that more time spent learning through play significantly boosts children’s cognitive and social development. Early literacy, self-regulation, and social interaction skills improve when children engage in meaningful learning experiences.

Rollout Schedule and Priority Groups

Pre-Prep will roll out gradually across Victoria:

  • 2025: Initial launch in six local government areas (LGAs)
  • 2026-2034: Expansion across more LGAs and priority groups, including Indigenous children and families with special needs

By 2036, all children in Victoria will access 1,800 hours of funded kindergarten, including 600 hours of Three-Year-Old Kindergarten and 1,200 hours of Pre-Prep.

Cost and Accessibility

Good news! Pre-Prep is part of the Free Kinder program, ensuring no direct costs for eligible families at participating centers. This move aims to save families up to $2,563 annually and help parents return to work.

Benefits for Children and Victoria

  • Children: Improved learning, social skills, and academic readiness
  • Victoria: Economic growth, job creation, and a stronger future workforce

Independent studies show that for every $1 invested in early education, $2 returns through increased productivity and reduced welfare spending.

The shift from Four-Year-Old Kindergarten to Pre-Prep is a game-changer for families and the state. It promises better educational outcomes and long-term economic benefits for Victoria. Start planning now by using the Pre-Prep calculator to check your child’s eligibility!
